Teodoro Nissen, M.D.
The founder of Bay Area Orthopedics, Dr. Teodoro Nissen, is a Fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in arthroscopic reconstruction of shoulder, knee and ankle
injuries. Dr. Nissen's surgical expertise involves joint replacement surgeries of the shoulder, hip and knee, as well as the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure.
Dr. Nissen first became involved with sports related injuries at U.C. Berkeley while working with the Intercollegiate Sports Medicine Staff. During his tenure, Dr. Nissen worked extensively with the gymnastic and soccer teams, was the head undergraduate trainer for the Cal Football team and provided care for Cal Rugby team, winning three consecutive national titles. Dr. Nissen, graduated from Cal at the top of his class with a degree in Human Biodynamics, and was awarded the UC Berkeley Departmental Citation. Dr. Nissen received his medical degree from The University of California, San Francisco, and completed his internship and residency at UCSF in the department of Orthopedic Surgery. While at UCSF, Dr. Nissen was awarded the UCSF post-sophomore fellowship in Pathology, and was elected to the Alpha Omega Honor Society. During his year as Chief Resident, he was awarded the Northern California Western Orthopedic Research Award for his research on computer assisted surgery. Dr. Nissen received further specialized Fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Sports Trauma from The Lake Tahoe Orthopedic Institute. With a commitment to the education of medical students, Dr. Nissen is currently an Adjunct Clinical Instructor for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UCSF, and an Adjunct Clinical Faculty at Tuoro University in Vallejo. Dr. Nissen has a special interest in providing care for underserved communities. He has worked with St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco, Operation Rainbow, the Marin County Clinic, San Francisco General Hospital, and the Institute for Global Orthopedics and Traumatology.
